Breaking Contract; the story of Vinnia Ndadi
Number of products in stock 0 This book gives an insight into the conditions, events and personalities which gave rise to the formation of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) of Namibia, and the launching of its armed struggle for freedom from South Africa. The book takes its name from the system of migrant contract labour which had a profound effect on the lives of Namibians and shaped resistance to South African rule. The life story of Helao Vinnia Ndadi, the book was first published in 1974. It documents, in Ndadi's own words, his experiences as a contract worker under apartheid and his role in organizing the Ovamboland People's Organization, which in 1960 became SWAPO. |

Broadcasting genocide
Number of products in stock 0 This report examines the role of the media in Rwanda, often blamed as a 'major cause' of the genocide which began on 6 April 1994. It documents the use of censorship and propaganda by the Rwandan authorities in the years preceding the genocide and demonstrates that incitement to violence against Tutsi was propagated by media organs with covert government sponsorship. The report traces the history of Radio-Télévision Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM) and documents its links with the interim government and militias which organized the genocide. It concludes that the radio station, often described as having 'provoked' the massacres, actually played the more specific role of conveying orders to militias and other groups already involved in the slaughter. RTLM was an instrument, not the cause, of genocide. |
