How do young AIDS orphans deal with the loss of their parents and their changed circumstances? This thesis discusses the social environment, experiences and perceptions of fourteen orphans in north central Namibia. The author followed the children for five months from September 2003 until March 2004, visiting them at home and setting up a children's club at school. The loss of their parents, the children's workload, bullying and their general concerns and worries are among the topics discussed. Focusing on the development of research methods to use when talking to children about sensitive subjects, the study aims to contribute to the fields of both the anthropology of childhood and medical anthropology.
